Our Programs & Philosophy

  • Safe, Friendly Environment for Learning & Fun

  • We believe that children learn and develop through play with the support of stimulating learning environments, engaged Educators and peer guidance.

  • Our goal is to create a place that engages each child.

We are committed to a play-based program in which children are encouraged to develop and extend their own interests, goals and capabilities. Children are continually supported to develop resilience, allowing them to accept new challenges and celebrate their successes.

We plan learning experiences through observing, documenting, creative brainstorming and flexibility within our program. The programs are based on the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) which underpins the Centre’s philosophy. For children in the year before school (Kindergarten), we use the Queensland Kindergarten Learning Guidelines (QKLG).

  • Our programs allow for many experiences throughout the day which may include:

    • Indoor and outdoor play
    • Individual, small and whole group play
    • Quiet and active play
    • Educator/teacher, child or family initiated play
    • Special event days, family days, visitors, incursions and shows

We are committed to providing a welcoming environment for all family members and acknowledge that families are essential to maintaining strong partnerships between home and centre. We value family participation both organised and spontaneous, and encourage families to contribute their skills, understandings and values at any time. We believe that a commitment to families and the wider community is beneficial to all children and educators, and fosters a strong sense of involvement and belonging.

At Scallywags Child Care we are proud to offer children in our Kindy program access to ELLA (Early Learning Language Australia). ELLA is a fun, digital and play-based language learning program that engages children in learning different languages. Our chosen ELLA language is Japanese. Children benefit from the ELLA program and develop new skills as they are introduced to new words and phrases in other languages, gain confidence in incorporating language and literacy into their play, and using technology with tablets. Our focus is making learning a new language fun, collaborative, and engaging for children to develop an interest in life-long learning.

In our modern world, technology is a big part of everyday life at home and in the community. This is why we believe it is important that children have opportunities to develop the skills to use technology as an educational resource. In our Wombat and Kangaroo rooms, we have interactive touchscreens where educators and children can use technology to investigate, experiment and use their imagination to create.

At Scallywags we use an online portfolio program, Storypark. All current families will have a secure login to access Storypark, and to view photos, documentation and programming.

  • Children's Safety

At Scallywags Child Care Centre we are committed to providing children, families and staff with a safe and supportive environment to learn and explore. We have strict policies in place to minimise incidents, to guarantee that we provide the safest environment possible, while still ensuring that children are properly stimulated in areas such as balance and coordination. Scallywags was designed with comfort and security of children in mind, and our Centre has a secure entrance through which all visitors must pass.  Our Centre has a secure entrance where families have open access with key code entry and communication system as well as electronic sign-in facilities.

  • Learning and Fun

We believe that children learn and develop through play with the support of stimulating learning environments, engaged educators and peer guidance. We spend time planning learning experiences to building on the emerging skills of the children, and to incorporate the children’s personal interests. We acknowledge that children learn best when their interests are captured, and seek to foster a fun learning environment. Being involved in fun learning experiences is vital for fostering a sense of belonging, and community which will have a profound effect on your child’s emerging sense of self.

    Friendly Place

A welcoming and inclusive environment is essential for children to develop to their fullest potential. Many of our Educators have been part of the Scallywags team for several years, and Scallywags has been owned and operated by Mark Davis since it opened in 1994. We believe that consistency is important in fostering a sense of safety and familiarity, and endeavour to maintain the same Lead and Relief Educators all year around. Strong partnerships between home and the Centre are maintained, and are essential to ensuring familial and community values are incorporated into our play programs.
